I have graduated on 11,2004 for my Master of IT.
I started to feel I am out of dated.
When I was started my university for first degree in IT, the most popular language is Java.
But Now, I have used .Net most.
Fortunately, I did my Master of IT which used .Net so much.
I don't know I need to learn a new programming language.
What comes next?
I wish I could download and install the updates for my brain.

Yes, IT is moving fast, but not that fast.
I am quite an old man in IT field. I start from Apple ][, use Basic, Pascal, Ada, Modele-2, C++, Delphi, and Java now.
Some say IT moves fast and hard to catch up. But I think if you know why IT moves, you can catch the direction or even predict the way the IT will move. It is quite important!
IT moves fast. But there are many basic knowledge still as the basic of those new things. Catch them, not those new programming languages.
What will come next? Did you notice modeling? Did you notice MDA? Maybe they will be the next in the future, right?

To Yo Yo Chen,
There are many new concepts too, such as web services.
In my university time, I was doing network programming.
I have defined the content for packets, writing sockets….
But Now, I only need to do web method in .Net.
Regards,
Michael.

When my university time, only Apple II and PC with Dos in PC level. Internet is not that popular, I just experienced BITNET then.
I don’t think there are many NEW concepts today. As web services, you can find it still utilizes sockets. They provides lots of API/library layers on the top to reduce works which we should do. It should much easier than old days with these infrastructures.
I work hard to catch up the fast moving IT. I believe you can do better than me, at least you are younger than me.
Back to my point, IT is moving fast, but dramatic changes are not too much. If you know WHY vendors provide new technologies/products/standards, you can catch up much easier.

That is exactly what I need!!! IT is moving so fast that it can be hard to keep up, even with the few technologies that I choose to specialise in. That’s why I think it’s really important to know what’s out there and get an idea of what’s going to stick and what’s going to be obsolete and replaced soon. And that’s why I go to all these user groups and events. I may seem like a junket queen, but I don’t have the time and energy to invest into something that gets me nowhere or leaves me stuck at the one spot. I want to be able to move around. I am getting a little bored with being a DBA sometimes…
